Intelligent Information Retrieval (SS 2011)
Ulli Waltinger & Ipke Wachsmuth

With increasing information overload, it is more and more difficult for users to find the right information in WWW. Information Retrieval (IR) deals with the search for information and the efficient access to information objects in heterogeneous databases. Here are the processes of information organization and representation of information storage and indexing, and data visualization in the foreground. A central challenge of the IR is to develop intelligent strategies and methods, which takes the (fuzzy) information need of individual users into account. The seminar Intelligent Information Retrieval is primarily concerned with the user-oriented criteria of IR. Apart from a brief introduction to the basic concepts of IR, we want to mainly discuss the semantic aspect of emerging methods, technologies and IR systems:

  • Introduction to Information Retrieval
  • Web-, Text und Data Mining
  • Opinion Mining
  • IR over Linked Data
  • Question Answering
  • Cognitive Models of IR

Representation and processing of multimodal documents (SS 2010)
Alexander Mehler & Ulli Waltinger & Peter Menke (practical)

The exercise for the lecture ‘text’ technology ‘introduces the development of text-technological algorithms. It focuses on the tasks of processing large and heterogeneous corpora. The students should be enabled to apply and characterize algorithms for text technological functions.

  • Video annotation and transcription
  • Elan, Praat, Exmaralda
  • XML-based annotation objects
